The Giro is a race staged road race finals in May in different regions of Italy for three weeks. It is one of the three Grand Tours, the second to appear historically in 1909.

The race leader's pink jersey used; the leader of the mountain classification wears blue, and the leader of the points classification used red shirt.

Three cyclists share the record of victories in the competition with five wins: Alfredo Binda, Fausto Coppi and Eddy Merckx. Cyclists highest number of stage wins are Mario Cipollini and Alfredo Binda.
